So, When Are You Getting Married?

I had an interesting conversation with a co-worker the other day. The employee, a photographer around my age here at WCSH, has been married for about six years now. He asked about my baby, and I gushed about how wonderful it was to be a mother, and asked him the next question that always seem to follow: "So when are you going to have kids?"

Tim said they were waiting, and seemed a little irritated. He explained he was sick of the question, which plagued him and his wife all the time. He said, in different words, you just can't be married without being pressured about babies. Being happily married just isn't enough.

I listened, and told him I can relate, in a different way. You see, I have a baby, but I'm not married. Matt and I live together, and are very happy, with absolutely no plans in sight to get married. Folks, including my grandmother, (may she rest in peace) just don't relate to that. Some people, even believe I am living in sin. The only conflict I run into is how I describe my relationship with Matt. Do I call him my boyfriend? Well, I don't feel like that term is strong enough. How about partner? Hmmm, I do use that, since it is "politically-correct", but then some people think I am in a same-sex domestic partnership. So, it gets tricky.

We all have our pressures to fit the mold of the perfect family, but the definition of that family, in this 21st century, is far from the 1950's cookie cutter image. As long as there's love, I say we're doing all right.

Hey, if Brad and Angelina can do it, why can't I?
