Project Graduation Ideas

Project Graduation season has arrived. For those that don't know, the name "Project Graduation" was coined twenty years ago by planners in Maine, when a total of eighteen people had died during graduation season due to alcohol-related crashes. Project Graduation is a gift from parents and the community to their graduates by providing an all night alcohol and drug free celebration for the graduates. I'm working on my son's class activities with a bunch of other moms (and dads) and thought I'd share the ideas we have discussed.

First, it amazes me how few locations there are in Maine for Project Graduation activities. The kids need to be active the whole night or it will be a bust, so if there isn't enough planned for them to do they'll be disappointed and want to leave.

The groups of moms (and dads) that have been involved in this process has come up with some great ideas: BBQ with barn fire, make your own ice cream sundaes, guitar hear competition, sumo wrestling suit competition, rock climbing wall, hypnotist, disco bowling, Six Flags, casino tables and nerf wars.

Good luck with your Project Graduation plans!

I suggest trying a theme that's a little more creative than your trad. grad. party. For instances, you can choose a Disco Party, or a Rock n' Roll Party, as well as a Luau Party (this is a great outdoor idea), Western Party, or Mardi Gras. One of the most popular party ideas in recent years is an Oscar Movie Party. The graduate is treated like a movie star as they approach the red carpet runway and are greeted by all the paparazzi, well actually, just friends and relatives, as they enter the house. Throughout the evening, brother or sister, can videotape everyone having a great time, then towards the end of the party, have a premier screening on a big screen TV for everyone to enjoy. This will surely generate lots of hoots and loud cheers. You can even award the graduate an Oscar, or use the Oscar as a pinata. If this sounds too extravagent, then stick to 2008 graduation party supplies and decoration by school colors. For instance, you can do a Red and White, or Blue and Yellow, etc party with plenty of 2008 banners, decorations and balloons.

last year our high school did a "Viva Las Vegas" theme. We rented a YMCA and had activities running through the night that would be found in Las Vegas. There was poker, black jack, dancing, karaoke. We also had wally ball, swimming and basketball. To encourage the grads to participate we handed out monopoly money for participation in activities and winning games. Later in the "early morning" hours we had a comedian arrive. We purchased fleece blankets for each student with their high school and graduating year embroidered on them and distributed them right before the comedian spoke. After the comedian was done the grads got to use their monopoly money to purchase items we bought or were donated that they would need for their next phase of life. They really seemed to enjoy it.

Great ideas! Try VolunteerSpot.com to help coordiante parent chaperons, set up, clean up, etc. With a few clicks, you can set the schedule of needs and Booster club members can choose what they are going to bring and do to make the night a memorable success. The free online signup tool saves time and frustration, makes it easy to get the help you need, and sends automated reminders to gently prompt parents to keep their commitments.
